Art In Public Places

Current Projects

ArtNET (formerly Gateways)

The Arts Commission, on behalf of the City of Toledo’s Art in Public Places Program, received a planning grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to assist in the funding of this program.

Walbridge Park

This wonderful new addition to the City’s public art collection stands tall at the Northern most tip of the park, across from the Broadway entrance to the Toledo Zoo. While the sculpture has been completed and in place since late Fall of 2005, the plaza work that will complete the overall design will take place this Spring, and was dedicated on July 20, 2006.

Art Tatum Memorial

The Arts Commission, in partnership with the Toledo Sculptor’s Guild and the Toledo Jazz Society, including a variety of community partners, convened a committee to commission a memorial to honor local jazz legend Art Tatum.

Maumee River Crossing

It has been a busy year for the Maumee River Project. The public art components of this project are moving forward in a two-prong approach.  The first is directly related public artwork along the corridor.  A call for artists for the two selected sites is in development and will be launched in early 2006.

The second and most active component is the tribute memorial, which has reached the final phase of the artist selection process. Over the past year we have been assisting the Maumee River Crossing Tribute Memorial Taskforce through the process of selecting an artist to create a memorial to honor those who built the new bridge, with a specific focus on those who were injured or lost their lives.   For more information on this project and the winning design, please visit www.lookuptoledo.org

Art in Public Buildings

The majority of the City’s Art in Public Buildings has been returned to display with a new location at the Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry. We have also re-established purchase awards to acquire works for the Art in Public Buildings collection.

Korean War Memorial

The APP committee has been working with the Korean War Veterans, the City of Toledo and the Lucas County Commissioners to guide this project to ensure the suitable presence, fit and long term maintenance of the memorial. It is scheduled to be completed in early 2006 with a dedication planned for early Summer. The monument was completed in the late Spring of 2006 and dedicated on June 25, 2006.
